Youkali is a tango habanera. Kurt Weill wrote it in 1934, in Paris, in exile from a Germany that had already begun to burn his music — an instrumental number for Jacques Deval's play Marie Galante. Roger Fernay put words to it the following year; the song outlived the play.
It is a song about an island that does not exist — a dream that, halfway through, unmasks itself — and it has gone on being recorded and reinterpreted ever since, across very different voices.
